This Wednesday J’adore Tresor wants to celebrate a woman who has taken both the fashion and music industries by storm. An inspiration to young people and a fierce activist for equality and HIV/AIDS, Lady Gaga is so much more than a pop star. Born Stefani Joanne Angeline Germanotta on March 6th 1986, it’s fairly surprising to learn that Gaga comes from an affluent family living in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York. Lady Gaga was educated in a strict religious school, the Convent of the Sacred Heart, where she performed in several musicals, and became influenced by the likes of Madonna, David Bowie, Michael Jackson and Queen. It was these influences that helped her become the now globally recognised individualistic style, winning her titles such as 4th to the top on VH1’s 100 Greatest Women in Music. It was also her upbringing that led her to become involved in a number of humanitarian causes such as LGBT activism.
It was recording artist Akon who recognised her unique singing abilities and style, and swiftly signed her to his label under Interscope records and prepared to release her debut studio album The Fame in 2008. The album was an undeniable hit, including well known tracks such as “Poker Face” and “Just Dance”. Only a year later her EP The Fame Monster was released to an even warmer welcome with singles such as ‘Telephone’ established her not only as a musician but an outrageous style icon, making the World’s media stand to attention to this most strange and mythical beast. Gaga however had only just begun her quest to world domination, her Monster Ball Tour became one of the highest grossing tours in history- making an astounding $227,400,000. We at J’adore are particularly impressed by this figure, as the list is mainly comprised of music moguls such as her idol Madonna or U2, who have both had decades of press, albums, and fan bases to work from. Gaga has achieved all this in 5 years, an accomplishment that shows Lady Gaga as the driven, business minded and inspiring character she is known to be.
She has always received positive criticism in the press, who praised her for “the musicality and showmanship of Michael Jackson and the powerful sexuality and provocative instincts of Madonna.” Of course it is her jaw-dropping psycho-style that gains the most attention and commentary for the star. Gaga names Alexander McQueen and Donatella Versace as her two main muses, and has now created her own Andy Warhol-esque factory where a production team creates clothes, props and hairstyles that form the complete brand that is Haus of Gaga. “When I’m writing music, I’m thinking about the clothes I want to wear on stage. It’s all about everything altogether—performance art, pop performance art, fashion. For me, it’s everything coming together and being a real story that will bring back the super-fan. I want to bring that back. I want the imagery to be so strong that fans will want to eat and taste and lick every part of us.” Her brand new single ‘Applause’ has hit the UK charts at number five this weekend, as looks to have a comfortable ride in the top ten for the foreseeable future! Her new video sums up all that it is Gaga, thousands of outfits, personas and possibilities!
