Madonna Louise Ciccone, known simply as Madonna, needs no introduction. You know someone is extremely famous when the world knows them only by their first name!
Having signed with her first record company in 1982, Madonna has been a performer for my entire life and then some! Her timeless songs are still played over and over again, and I think most of us would be unashamed to admit we know most of the words to ‘Like a Virgin’ and ‘Like a Prayer’. Does anyone else still love hearing these songs?
CNN describes Madonna as ‘arguably the most influential female recording artist of all time’ and in 2008, Madonna was ranked number two, missing out on first place to The Beatles, on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists. So I think we can all agree that Madonna has firmly secured her lasting legacy in the pop music industry.
You don’t get to where she is without a few controversies. In 1985, Madonna performed ‘Like a Virgin’ at the MTV Music Awards and her suggestive dancing whilst wearing a wedding dress attracted a lot of media attention. Does anyone remember this? I can’t say I do as I wasn’t even born. However, I do remember watching the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003 and seeing Madonna kiss both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. I also remember the controversy this stunt caused!
No blog about Madonna would be complete without talking about her fashion sense. Since she rose to fame, Madonna has constantly been pushing the limit of fashion. In the past she has rocked the thrift shop look, with her arms full of rubber bracelets and her trade made hair ribbon, she has shocked with her miniscule underwear inspired outfits including the infamous cone bra ensemble, and she has dazzled with her award outfits, one of which featured $20 million worth of Harry Winston.
Madonna has not yet shown any signs of slowing down. She is constantly in the magazines and newspapers and just today she was all over the news having performed with Miley Cyrus. Just the other day, Madonna performed for the 33 weddings that were officiated at the 2014 Grammy Awards. Let’s hope her reign does not end anytime soon!
